Requirements for
basic residential or business service: IMPORTANT NOTE! in some regions or countries,
Mexico in particular, cable internt providers are putting all
users behind their NAT/Router. If your cable provider does not give you
a public (may be either dynamic or fixed) IP address, you should
not use a router, nor a modem with an integrated router, as this
represents two layers of NAT/routers and is nearly impossible for most
SIP systems to surmount reliably. Many of these same providers
are now
offering wireless modems which implement built in NAT/Router thus the
user is behind two NAT/Routers whern connecting to the modem
directly. We therefore recommend against the use of such modems with
integrated NAT/Routers, such as the wireless units. Many such providers
WILL allow you multiple private IP addresses with no addtional fee, so
you may use an ethernet switch in place of the router in the image
above, or in the case of many modems, connect your computer via USB,
and your ATA device via ethernet. If you aready know you are behind a
double NAT, there is nothing we can do!
